As incredible as it sounds, from time to time I DO remember that I have a website.

I’m also aware that I haven’t updated since July (the Spanish version at least).

The truth is that my lack of time and inspiration haven’t done any good to the blog. After I returned from the US in August I didn’t know what to write about. Many times I started writing something only to leave it empty again.

I should shame myself and say I’m sorry.

After finishing the 3rd year of Radio, TV and Film studies at the University of North Texas I moved to Washington DC for 3 months. During that time I was working at Voice of America. In fact I still work with them in the “Technomaniac” column for their website.

When I came back to Spain I thought it’d be a little bit stupid to keep the same path I had taken with the blog: showing how the life is for a foreign exchange student in the US. Of course I could now do the same for the rest of the world, showing the life of a Spanish student. But that would mean little for the Spanish readers and it didn’t sound like a very good idea.

For personal things, there’s already Tuenti, Facebook, Twitter… and I haven’t had many interesting things happening to tell.

So then… what to write about?

It’s something I should start thinking.

Some interesting things DID happen, like my being a producer for a short movie at the University of Navarra.

On NTTV, the local TV station for the University of North Texas, we created at the beginning of last semester a group of Spanish-speaking students to create a new show for hispanics. Now the show is almost ready to be aired and this is one of the sections of the 30-minute show.

My work on this video was both producing, directing and editing.

THIS IS NOT A FINAL VERSION, but a preview model until the rest of the contents and the logos are ready. Here it goes:

In Spain lots of people complain about the “americanization” of many TV shows. But the truth is… IT’S FUN TO PRODUCE THEM!!

I will explain myself: each of the students in our class had to produce and direct a TV game show contest and record it all LIVE. My contest was a “lite” version of the Spanish TV contest “Wordpass” (I even had to create a system to show on-screen the real-time scores for both contestants to emulate the original contest and use 4 cameras at the same time). The picture above is from the last game show we recorded. Directed and produced by our classmate Oz, I was the host for a pie-eating contest. The ones next to me are Sam and Dustin, the two contestants.

As you can see, we all enjoyed the pies in the end…

I might soon make some of the videos from the contests available here on this website ;-)

I only want to upload today a small radio ad I recorded in my Radio & TV Announcing class here at UNT. It’s not anything big, but like all the projects I do, I keep them safe and, sometimes I like publishing them online.

The ad is for a fake videogame. The picture used as the background is in Spain, at the studios for Cadena SER Cinco Villas (radio station back at home) but it was good enough for this purpose:

Starting with which number of inches do you think a TV screen is really big?

32”?

40”??

Maybe 50”???

In Spain, screens of 50” are incredibly high. Start thinking of over $2.500 at the very least.

But here in the USA with the philosophy of “bigger is better” (specially in Texas), there’s no problem in finding TV screens of the humongous size of 73”!!!

Ready with all the typical specs of hi-tech TVs, it comes with all the new standards like 1080p, HDMI connections, Digital TV… and many more.

So what about the price? It’s as cheap as $1750!

Today I wanted to update with anything, but I couldn’t think of what I could post so I uploaded some random pictures from the past weeks:

For example, I want to say that the ice creams at Denton Square are GREAT!

I also want to add that for the first time we got in one of the dorm cafeterias (Bruce Hall) a sub with crunchy-on-the-outside bread  (just the way we like it in Spain). I had never seen one here!

John and Brandon are still as crazy as ever, even right in the middle of our dorm’s halls.

 What you’re about to see is a series of church announcements that, even though whoever wrote them probably did it with his best intentions in his mind, they still result being hilarious. Special thanks to Manolo Rodríguez for sending me the original file.

I’ve tried doing my best to translate it into English, but there might still be some parts that will not keep the same meaning no matter how hard I try. Still, I’ve tried to keep them as close as possible to the original.

Today was my first time working (as a volunteer – I can’t legally work in the US because of my Student VISA) in the TV station NTTV (North Texas Television).

Being a TV station made by and for students, all the NTTV team has free access to participate in any of the productions. In my case, today I was editor and news-writer at the same time I helped with the live production of the show.

The name is NTTV Noon News, a small news program of 5 minutes aired from Monday to Thursdays. Here is today’s show (sorry for the low volume at the beginning of the show):

North Texas Television is a non-profit, student run, cable access channel on channel 42 on Verizon and channel 22 on Charter Communications Cable in Denton, Texas.

I usually don’t publish articles like this, but this piece of news that my friend John sent me through Facebook surprised me so much that I couldn’t let it go.

Acording to the digital version of the British tabloid The Sun, Alfie, 13 years old, and Chantelle, 15, had a baby five days ago.

When asked what he was thinking when all this happened, Alfie said that “I never thought about how I would afford it. My father sometimes gives me 10 pounds.”

The news have reached even the highest ranks of the British Government. The lider of the Torys, David Cameron, commented that “When I saw those pictures in the morning, I thought how worrying it is that in Britain children today have children”. Prime Minister Gordon Brown didn’t comment directly on the story, but added that it’s important that the Government does everything possible to avoid teenage pregnancy.

I only wanted to let people know about these news through here. As for me, I think it is really irresponsible that parents don’t even realize the situation until it is so late. Even worse, how could a kid, who only did it once without protection at 12 years old, that he could have a child and continue with his life as usual.

Didn’t know how to update my blog, since there have been MANY things going on during this first month of my Second Semester overseas. That’s why I decided to pick up a number of random things that I thought were curious to upload:

Number 1:
A puppy doll that sings and dances “I feel good”, on sale at Walmart.

Number 2:

My dorm has organized this game called “Hitman”. Each player recieves a picture of someone they have to “kill” with a sock.

You just get to see a picture of your objective (out of 800 people living in the dorm) and you don’t get to know who has been hired to kill YOU. My roomate has already died. As for me, I still don’t know who my objective is, but at least I already know her name…

Number 3:
My dorm has a little kitchen in case someone wants to be creative. Last Saturday I did some cookies with some friends.

Number 4:

Electronics store Circuit City in Denton closes this month. So they’re trying to get rid off all their stock.

Discounts of up to 60% in consoles, hardware, cameras, mp3s… And until the end of the month they will keep reducing the prices.

¿Me? I bought a TV tuner for my laptop.

Number 5:
They sell Obama trading cards. For real! They sell them in almost any supermarket…

El profesor de Producción de TV Avanzada dijo al comienzo de la clase:

“Tenéis hora y media para grabar 6 anuncios de televisión que os tendréis que inventar ahora mismo. Todo tiene que grabarse en el plató de televisión en directo, lo que no salga bien a la primera se queda así. COMENZAD”.

Rápidamente los 18 alumnos de la clase nos distribuimos en 6 grupos para organizar, idear y dirigir nuestros pequeños anuncios. Contaba más arriesgarse que optar por algo sencillo y funcional. Tampoco teníamos que optar por algo serio, podíamos inventarnos un producto estúpido para poder anunciarlo.

Los tres de mi grupo ideamos el siguiente anuncio/parodia:

Una semana más tarde (hoy) hemos tenido que grabar programas de entrevistas incluyendo intermedios con la publicidad que habíamos grabado la semana pasada.

La foto que veis justo aquí arriba es una cámara montada sobre una grúa mecánica que se controla mediante los dos joysticks de abajo.

Y por ahora… no tengo mucho más que añadir. Estos días los tengo muy ocupados entre clases, trabajos, proyectos… y cierto regalo de cumpleaños para un amigo.

Increible pero cierto: dos hackers en Austin, TX han logrado cambiar el mensaje de un cartel luminoso público en una autopista para avisar de que hay peligro de zombies. Sí, habéis leído bien. Peligro de ZOMBIES.

Durante unas cuantas horas de la mañana pasada el cartel mostraba mensajes como “peligro de zombies nazi” “se acerca el fin del mundo” o “peligro, zombies más adelante”.

Si hace poco comenté que en Denton estábamos a 26º Celsius, ahora estamos en todo lo contrario: el clima ha vuelto al frío helado. Bueno, realmente ahora mismo estamos en un intermedio de 12º, pero ayer estábamos a 1º. El clima aquí es una locura…

Os dejo con unas fotos recientes. ¿Os había comentado alguna vez lo bien que viene tener a una amiga que trabaja en un McDonalds? :)

Ah… iHop, la “International House of Pancakes” (Casa Internacional de las Tortitas). Un restaurante muy típico en los Estados Unidos. Y los nuevos extranjeros (en este caso los tres austriacos Markus, Andreas y Daniel y el mexicano Carlos) querían visitarlo. Aprovechando que era viernes y que las cafeterías del campus ya habían cerrado a esa hora, decidimos pasarnos a probar el lugar:

En esta foto tenemos a Markus, comiendo una gigantesca hamburguesa. Ya podéis comprobar que no se trata de la típica hamburguesa, sino de una hecha con un buen entrecotte de ternera.

Daniel se pidió unas deliciosas costillas con salsa barbacoa (más bien salsa barbacoa con costillas como se ve en la foto, pero bueno).

¿Yo? Un buen solomillo con huevos revueltos y unas tortitas con mantequilla. Si os suena un poco exagerado es porque no lo habéis probado. ¡Todo una delicia!

Aunque tampoco es que nos quejemos de la comida de las residencias: esta es la cafetería de la residencia en la que vivimos: Maple Hall.

Todavía sigo con el proyecto de grabar un videoblog, esta vez parece ser que los Austriacos se unirán a mi compañero de cuarto John :)

Aquí estoy de vuelta (después de mucho tiempo sin escribir) en la Universidad de North Texas.

Nuevo semestre, nueva residencia, nueva gente, nuevas clases…

Pero las temperaturas siguen igual. Yo creo que la gente aquí en North Texas no tiene ni idea de lo que significa ser invierno:

¡26º Celsius, señores! Con una temperatura mínima (a la noche) de 0ºC, nos encontramos en estos instantes a 26ºC.

Los nuevos extranjeros de intercambio están que no se lo creen. Pero los austriacos bien felices se han sacado hoy sus pantalones cortos y han ido tan panchos a clase:

Estos tres son sólo algunos de los nuevos extranjeros que han venido este año a UNT (y casualmente estos tres están en la misma residencia que yo ahora, incluso el mismo pasillo). Al igual que yo el semestre pasado, iban algo perdidos por el campus, así que les eché alguna mano para orientarse mejor. De izquierda a derecha, son Andreas, Markus y Daniel, de Austria los tres.

Durante la primera semana, en la que no hemos tenido clases, aproveché para presentarles a algunas de las personas que yo ya conocía del semestre anterior, como por ejemplo Keaton (primera foto a la derecha) y Gaylen (segunda foto a la izquierda).

Por cierto, ¿he comentado que mi nuevo compañero de cuarto y yo igual grabamos un video para el blog?

Como ya dije en su momento, pondría algunos de los anuncios de TV que grabábamos en nuestras clases de producción de TV.

Cada uno de los alumnos teníamos que grabar un pequeño anuncio televisivo (si queríamos podía ser en clave de humor) contando siempre con un límite de tiempo de 30 minutos. En este intérvalo de tiempo, quien dirigiera en ese momento tenía que: explicar su guión a todo el equipo (técnicos de imagen, sonido, teleprompt, cámaras, jefe de planta, actores, asistente de dirección…), poner todo a punto, realizar al menos un ensayo y grabar un producto acabado que nos puntuarían.

Como el espacio de tiempo es tan limitado, se grababa todo de vez, sin edición posterior, uniendo música, gráficos y video de vez.

El siguiente video es el que yo dirigí para una agencia de viajes ofreciendo ofertas a España. La presentadora es Hollie Groos (de la cual publicaré próximamente un corto). Como dice ella al final: ¡disfruta!

Si alguno de vosotros ha jugado a The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker seguramente reconocerá la canción que se toca en este video. Lo increible sin embargo es cómo este chico de 23 años la ha tocado de forma orquestal él solo. Más de ocho instrumentos entremezclados en una edición de video no-lineal que hacen de esta versión de la canción una de las mejores que he escuchado nunca. Y eso que he escuchado muchas versiones de esta canción…

Hace ya un tiempo hice un artículo sobre ultra-portátiles, en el que comparaba tres modelos que para aquel entonces eran prácticamente lo único existente en el mercado con verdaderas capacidades: el Sony Vaio TZ, MacBook Air y EeePC.

Pero el mercado ha evolucionado mucho desde entonces, y recientemente se ha pasado por mis manos el HP Mini 2133:

El HP Mini 2133 es un ultra-portátil de 8’9 pulgadas de pantalla diseñado para llevarse con comodidad a cualquier sitio y con la potencia suficiente para poder visitar páginas web, revisar el e-mail, ver videos en internet, editar documentos de Office y otras tareas que no requieran mucha potencia. Y desde luego lo hace con una soltura impresionante para un ordenador de este tamaño.

Para poder haceros la idea, he apilado tres portátiles uno sobre otro. En esta primera foto podéis comparar cómo se sitúa el HP Mini frente a un portátil de 15’4 pulgadas, mi antiguo Sony VAIO FZ. Abajo del todo, casi cubierto por los otros dos en la primera foto, se encuentra mi portátil actual: el Sony VAIO FW de 16’4 pulgadas. En esta foto podéis comparar los grosores:

Por supuesto el peso del portátil es mínimo, llegando tan sólo a 1’2 kilos.

Además el diseño es bastante elegante, con una carcasa metálica muy cuidada que le quita el aspecto de juguete que tienen muchos ultra-portátiles para adoptar una forma más seria y profesional.

Normalmente estos portátiles tienen teclados que dejan mucho que desear, pero en este caso el HP Mini 2133 se comportaba de maravilla. El teclado es completo y consigue encajar en el diseño gracias a que HP ha eliminado los espacios vacíos que se suelen encontrar entre los bordes laterales del portátil y el comienzo del teclado.

En cambio la almohadilla táctil deja mucho que desear. Su reducido tamaño no deja espacio para mucho movimiento y no detecta correctamente cuando queremos realizar un clic. Los botones físicos se sitúan de forma extraña en los laterales y cuesta un tiempo adaptarse a este nuevo diseño. Por supuesto siempre podemos conectar un ratón a través de uno de los dos puertos USB, y además lo podremos hacer tanto en el lado izquierdo como en el derecho, lo cual vendrá muy bien para diestros y zurdos:

El funcionamiento del portátil es relativamente rápido. Podremos navegar con soltura por internet, pero si abrimos varias pestañas la poca potencia del procesador y la escasez de memoria RAM se dejará notar. Sin embargo su funcionamiento es totalmente silencioso, es difícil saber si se encuentra apagado o encendido a no ser que acerquemos mucho la oreja.

Por supuesto el portátil cuenta con wi-fi para navegar por internet, y además el set se completa con una webcam de resolución VGA (640 x 480) que funciona sin problema para realizar videoconferencias. Los altavoces se comportan con la suficiente calidad como para que no nos duelan los oídos pero no son tampoco ninguna maravilla, tan solo lo suficiente para un ordenador de estas dimensiones.

Cabe destacar sin embargo que el portátil carece de lector de CD/DVD, pero eso es algo muy frequente en este tipo de aparatos.

En cuanto a la duración de la batería, el portátil tiene una autonomía de 3 horas con la pantalla al nivel de brillo máximo, navegando por internet y viendo varios videos. Con un uso más moderado esta duración se podrá alargar sin duda alguna a 4 horas y con suerte se podrá exprimir media hora más.

Desde luego, un portátil muy adecuado para llevar siempre encima en caso de que necesitemos realizar algún apunte, visitar una página web o comprobar nuestro email en cualquier momento.

Con esta entrada sí que se acaba el semestre por fin. Ahora toca volver a España a pasar las navidades… y después volver a Estados Unidos, aunque esta vez habrá novedades.

Ya sólo para empezar, la habitación: abandono tal y como dije “el motel” y me voy a vivir a Maple Hall.

Y no sólo eso, sino que además cambio de compañero de habitación. Aún no lo conozco en persona, pero por lo que sé de él es un chaval majo. Éste es su lado de la habitación:

Pero bueno, ahora a lo que toca. Comienzan las vacaciones de Navidad, mañana me toca coger el vuelo de vuelta a casa, y habrá que hacer visitas a gente en Ejea, Pamplona y Jaca. Un mes de vacaciones, que no es poco :D

El problema de los concursos de televisión en directo en los que el concursante llama por teléfono es que a veces a alguna persona mayor que no comprende bien cómo funcionan estos sistemas les da por participar y la cosa se alarga eternamente.

A la pobre Vanesa del concurso “El Eurojuego” le tocó presentar el concurso cuando una mujer mayor llamada Maruja participó con el televisor puesto a volumen completo, la imagen y sonido llegaban a éste con retraso, y Maruja se pensó que su voz por la tele era la de otra mujer robándole la respuesta. El video es impresionante. Yo lo siento por la presentadora que tuvo que aguantar con esto posiblemente su momento más estresante en la vida. No me quiero ni imaginar cómo estaría el resto del equipo de producción.

Pero es que la pobre Vanesa debe tener la peor suerte del mundo como presentadora, porque atención, ¡ésta no es la primera vez que le pasa algo semejante! Casi un año antes de la “Situación Maruja” le ocurrió la siguiente con Dolores. Ni comparación vamos: ¡Dolores es todavía muchisimo peor!
